The abouTown Story

The concept of a monthly news magazine focused on the people, places, events, news, and issues of Bryan/College Station came to fruition in October 2007 when abouTown Press was first published. The idea was to truly be "everyone's local news magazine". To that end, abouTown Press continues to be mailed directly to the vast majority of homes and businesses in the area. In fact, abouTown has by far the largest distribution of any local publication.

My take: Whenever I visited my folks, the abouTown Press always caught me up to speed as to what was happening in the Bryan–College Station metropolitan area. For those unfamiliar with the region, it centers on the twin cities of Bryan and College Station in the Brazos Valley of Texas. Now residing on the East coast in Philadelphia, I'm a considerable distance from my hometown of Bryan. While College Station–Bryan, TX has a cosmopolitan flair compared to the neighboring small towns, it certainly can't rival the cultural dynamism of Philadelphia. For instance, during a recent evening out in Philly, my girlfriend and I stumbled upon a retro cinema. To our delight, they were featuring a Raquel Welch film marathon. The iconic actress's movies transported me to a different era, yet it was a stark contrast to the memories of my childhood in Bryan. The vibrant, modern ambiance of Philadelphia is miles apart from the rustic charm I associate with Bryan, Texas. The picture above perfectly captures that nostalgic charm, reminding me of my early years, family, and friends back in Texas. I haven't been back to Bryan since my folks passed away. But in a bid to keep the memories alive, I discovered that the domain registration for the abouTown Press website was available. I promptly acquired it and revived the site using archived content. It's my personal tribute, a nostalgic homage to abouTown Press and the hometown that shaped me. Enjoy.

Farm Life Exhibit at The Brazos Valley Museum
Thu November 10, 2011
All day event
Bryan, Texas --- The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History, in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), proudly presents Farm Life: A Century of Change for Farm Families and Their Neighbors, from November 10, 2011-January 7, 2012. This captivating exhibit allows visitors to gain insight into how families lived and worked on farms, as well as the economic and cultural roots influencing families today. This exhibition, rather than focusing on the technology of farming, examines what it means for a family to live and work on the land. Through artifacts, photographs, graphic text panels, and interactives, audiences learn about the social, economic, and cultural framework of farms and their surrounding communities.
