HULLABALOO DINER
By VALERIE MARKERT

A quaint little
diner establishment located in Wellborn traveled a long way to bring great food and entertainment to locals in Bryan/College Station. Hullabaloo Diner is a 1940’s style diner that was originally located in New York, purchased on Ebay and then relocated to Brazos Valley.

The 53,000 pound diner was moved 1850 miles by truck and lowboy trailer to Wellborn, Texas. The week long trip employed various permits, curfews and escorts to move the 16 foot wide by 48 foot long diner.

Hullabaloo Diner was featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” They filmed the program in February and it aired on April 30, 2007. This program generated a lot of interest in the Hullabaloo diner from Food Network viewers and many of them traveled many miles to see what the craze was about.

“Someone from Philadelphia flew down to eat here,” Amber Jarrett, manager of the restaurant, said. “We also had people come from Austin, Dallas and San Antonio,” she said.

Rich Risbon, restaurant owner and executive chef, has been in the restaurant business for more than 30 years. His wife, Sydney Steinbacher, is originally from College Station.

Risbon serves not only Texas-style home cooked meals but also meals with East Coast flair. Like most restaurants, Hullabaloo has their specialty dishes such as the Philly Cheese Steak, Mexican Green Chili Burger, and Roman Sausage Sandwich, just to name a few. Also included on the menu is a wide selection of breakfast food. “We serve breakfast all day long and that seems to be a big hit,” said Jarrett. Keeping with the 1940’s theme, Hullabaloo diner also serves shakes, malts and floats.

Hullabaloo Diner also has a party room expansion that includes a bar. On Friday and Saturday nights from 5:00 PM to midnight, live bands perform at the bar. The bands that play are usually local bands, but occasionally the bands come from Dallas or Austin. The entire facility is non-smoking.

The diner has a very friendly atmosphere. “The crowd is usually more family oriented on Friday and Saturday night, but everyone is welcome to come and have a good time,” said Steinbacher.

If you want to remember the nostalgic feeling of a 1940’s diner, Hullabaloo Diner is definitely the place to be.
