THE CUNNINGHAM FAMILY
Charlesmecca and her two young daughters share a two-bedroom duplex with Charlesmecca’s
mother, Lottie Mae. Charlesmecca shares her bedroom with her daughters and Lottie
Mae has the second bedroom. Strong wind drafts and poor insulation in their duplex
create drastic differences in the temperature during the winter and summer months.
During the cold months, the family uses only the stove for heat and during the
hotter months, the air conditioner runs constantly, resulting in high utility
bills. The family’s duplex is located in an unsafe neighborhood where Charlesmecca
and Lottie Mae constantly worry about the girls’ safety. The children’s
bikes were recently stolen, cars race through the area and loud music is heard
throughout the night.

THE VILLEDA FAMILY
Gregorio and Eva Villeda have three children: a 5-year-old son, a 3-year-old son,
and a newborn daughter. The family lives in a dilapidated two-bedroom trailer
home in Bryan. The floors of their home are weak and mushy. Gregorio has reinforced
the flooring and walls to prevent them from collapsing, but the family does not
have insulation installed. The roof leaks, and air flows through cracks between
the windows and doors. The family is scared to use the front room of the home
due to a murder that was committed in front of it, so Eva and the children share
the bed while Gregorio sleeps on the floor. Gregorio has worked for Brazos County
in the Road and Bridge Department for the past six years. Eva stays home with
the children. They have been approved for a three bedroom home.

THE SMALLWOOD FAMILY
Tanya Smallwood and her children moved to Bryan from New Orleans after Hurricane
Katrina. Tanya, a recent widow, works as an independent contractor with The Bryan/College
Station Eagle, but can only afford a two-bedroom apartment in a neighborhood that
is not safe for her children. She shares her bedroom with her 9-month-old son,
and her 3-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter share the second bedroom. Tanya
said, “Stability, security, and safety were three things my family and I
longed for during Hurricane Katrina, but now, with the help of Habitat for Humanity
and their hand, we have been able to obtain all three. I am truly grateful for
the opportunities I have been given.”

THE GREEN FAMILY
Kim Green and her two children, aged 8 and 17, relocated to Bryan from New Orleans
after Hurricane Katrina. The family currently lives in a neighborhood where several
robberies have occurred and cars race through her apartment complex at speeds
that make it unsafe to be outside the apartment. Kim constantly fears for her
children’s safety. Kim has been a county clerk for the Brazos County Court
House for about a year.

THE DAVIS FAMILY
Ora Lee Davis lives with her daughter Latreace and her four grandsons in a two
bedroom home. Ora Lee has rented the home for the last 15 years and the home is
in dire need of repair. The roof is sagging and leaks, along with the walls. Little
insulation inside the home, rotting window seals and drafts have added to the
rising cooling bills generated by window units. The doors do not work properly
and raise concerns about intruders. The Davis home will be a handicap accessible
home since both Ora Lee and Latreace suffering from crippling arthritis.

to save money for the future and for their daughter and son. All four family members
share a single bedroom in Joseph’s mother’s home. Joseph’s sister
recently moved in as well, adding to the issues of overcrowding and safety. Joseph
is a produce manager with Kroger and Justine takes care of her children full-time.

THE ZAPATA FAMILY
Stephanie Zapata and her two children, a 3-year old daughter and an 11-year-old
son, currently live with Stephanie’s mother. When accepted into the program,
the Zapata family lived in a two bedroom apartment in College Station that Stephanie
had been renting for five years. However, the family outgrew the apartment and
could not afford larger living accommodations. Stephanie’s daughter struggles
with persistent health issues after having a kidney transplant at 18 months old.
Stephanie works part-time at Wal-Mart. Upon hearing of the Zapata’s Habitat
home, Wal-Mart donated a $1000 check to Habitat and Stephanie’s fellow employees
volunteered 100 sweat equity hours to help Stephanie as she deals with her daughter’s
persistent health issues.
